Job Description

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is continuing to expand, providing world-class medical care to our diverse patient population, and is seeking an exceptional and innovative scholar to lead a nationally recognized program as the Vice Chair for Research.

The ideal candidate is a nationally/internationally respected scientist who has maintained an externally funded and independent research program with an impact on or implications for the field of Urology. A focus on prostate and/or bladder cancer is preferred. Demonstrated experience as a research mentor is required. Expertise in research administration is desired, but not mandatory. Academic rank and track commensurate with academic record and experience.

The Department of Urology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report (#24) for delivering the highest quality of care for the treatment of urologic conditions. 

The Department of Urology has a rich history and timeline dating back to 1917. Under the leadership of Cheryl Lee, MD, as chair, the Department is composed of six specialty Divisions with 21 adult faculty members and 13 advanced practice providers. Collectively, the Department performs nearly 20,000 clinical and operative procedures annually. Seven pediatric urologists at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have academic appointments in the Department. Clinical care, research, education, and community service are major priorities, and the Department is engaged in multicenter and multispecialty initiatives. 

The NCI-designated OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) and the James Cancer Hospital provide a collaborative research environment. The overarching research priorities of the OSUCCC – James are immuno-oncology, cancer engineering, translational genomics, cancer prevention, and survivorship. It has over 360 researchers who represent 11 of the 15 colleges at Ohio State and at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Each scientist is in one of five interactive research programs within the comprehensive cancer center. These multidisciplinary teams translate groundbreaking discoveries into innovative patient care via hundreds of clinical trials on the latest therapies, some of which are available nowhere else. The OSUCCC – James is also funded by the NCI to conduct phase 1, 2, and 3 clinical trials of novel cancer drugs provided by the NCI.

In addition to two research fellowships, the Department sponsors clinical fellowship programs in Endourology (Endourological Society) and Urologic Oncology (Society of Urologic Oncology) while Nationwide Children’s Hospital sponsors a fellowship in pediatric urology (Society for Pediatric Urology).


Position Overview:

The position is full-time on the tenure-track, with a salary commensurate with education and experience.

The Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Urology is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing and implementing the department’s strategic research priorities to grow the research portfolio, recruit new scientists, expand research space, increase research funding, and improve research impact. The successful candidate will develop a translational research program with clinical implications ultimately capable of advancing the care of patients with urologic disease. 

The Vice Chair for Research will foster a collaborative research environment and promote a culture of discovery. She/he will ensure that the department maintains a high standard of scientific excellence and innovation. Joint appointments with other departments across the University will be available and encouraged.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Research Leadership: Develop a translational research program within the Department of Urology. Recruit and retain established and emerging scientists. Foster an environment of scientific inquiry and innovation. Lead high-impact research projects and initiatives within the department. Promote interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the institution to achieve the strategic research goals of the department.

Funding and Grants: Identify and pursue funding opportunities from federal agencies, private foundations, and industry partners. Oversee the preparation and submission of single and multi-PI grant proposals. Manage research budgets and ensure proper allocation of resources.

Mentorship: Teach and mentor students, trainees, and/or junior faculty while committing to recruit and develop women and underserved minorities.


Requirements:

  1. MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field.
  2. Actively funded research program in basic or translational research
  3. Research designed with the goal of leading to clinical trials
  4. Proven track record of independent research and successful grant acquisition.
  5. Experience in a leadership role within an academic or research setting.
  6. Extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  7. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  8. Proficiency in research methodologies and data analysis.
  9. Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor undergraduate, medical and postdoctoral students.
  10. Exceptional organizational and communication skills
  11. Qualifications for an appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank
