The Cardiothoracic Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions primarily in the operating room (OR), consults, clinic, and acute care settings. Working under the supervision of a physician, the APP assists in evaluating and treating patients in step-down, floor, clinic, and consult areas, documenting all care and assessments.
Key responsibilities include:
Performing physical examinations and specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including CABG, AVR, MVR, aortic surgery, VATS, robotic lung and mediastinal surgery, chest tube placement and management, wound suturing, and dressing changes
Supporting physicians in diagnosing medical conditions, developing and implementing care plans, and prescribing appropriate treatments
Ordering, scheduling, and performing laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures (e.g., urinalysis, blood tests, x-rays), while educating patients on procedures
Coordinating consultations and referrals with other medical professionals and community resources
Providing patient education on health maintenance, self-examinations, behavior modification, follow-up care, home management, medications, and recovery guidance
This role requires a high level of clinical skill, critical thinking, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary care team.
Master’s Degree in Nursing (as Advanced Practice Nurse)
Minimum 2 years of critical care nursing experience
Current Georgia RN license required for NPs
Current Georgia authorization/certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) required
Minimum 1 year of APP experience in cardiothoracic surgery required
BLS and ACLS certifications required
Cardiac Surgery Advanced Life Support (CALS) preferred
