Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Internal Medicine Department, Pulmonary Disease and critical Care Medicine is to provide superior, compassionate, and innovative clinical care to our patients using state-of-the-art knowledge and resources and to conduct and disseminate clinical, research and scholarship, with a focus on the care of patients and education of future clinicians.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine is seeking a dynamic leader in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine to direct a robust and growing program at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Administrative | Responsible for providing leadership within the Division for all clinical, educational and research missions along with the day-to-day management of division operations, staffing, budget, and division programs. This includes working with Department of Internal Medicine administration to promote the mission, vision, and goals of the division and department.

Teaching | In addition to overseeing the teaching activities of the division as a whole, the Division Chief will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students, residents, fellows and other healthcare professionals based on their expertise. Faculty routinely provide education with learners in their clinical sessions. In addition, the Chief will be expected to play a primary role in the mentoring of faculty in advancing their academic careers.

Research | The Chief should have a nationally recognized research program with an established record of publication in high-impact journals and success in securing external funding. They are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in the Department of Internal Medicine. The Division Chief encourages junior faculty, fellows and residents to participate in many ongoing basic, clinical and educational research projects.

Service | The Chief will serve on departmental, College, and/or University and Hospital committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Clinical | Responsible for managing and growing the multidisciplinary team in the Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Division which currently includes physicians and advanced practice providers in many subspecialties:

  • Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
  • Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Multidisciplinary Sarcoidosis Center
  • Interventional Pulmonology
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Lung Transplantation Program
  • Medical Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (MRICU)
  • Hospital Medical Intensivist Program

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.D. or D.O. degree
  • American Board of Internal Medicine Certified in Pulmonary Medicine
  • American Board of Internal Medicine Certified in Critical Care Medicine
  • Distinguished record of scholarship manifested by a strong publication record; nationally recognized for achievement in clinical research
  • Administrative leadership experience in an academic medical center
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

  • Track record of extramural funding such as NIH
  • Track record of effectively mentoring junior faculty
  • Strong skills in medical education
