Outpatient Primary Care Physician Opportunity

The Charleston, SC VA Healthcare System

The Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Health Care System (RHJ VA HCS) is recruiting for a Primary Care Physician to join our Hinesville, GA location. A qualified candidate will possess the experience, skills, and capabilities to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to our Veteran population. We provide you with health care services at 7 locations, serving a 21-county area in South Carolina and Georgia. Facilities include our Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston and 6 community-based outpatient clinics in Beaufort, North Charleston, Goose Creek, Hinesville, Myrtle Beach, and Savannah. We're an innovative care center within the Veterans Integrated Service Network 7 (VISN 7), which includes medical centers and clinics in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina.

The Charleston, SC VA Health Care System is seeking multiple full-time Primary Care physicians for the following locations:

  • Myrtle Beach, SC
  • Goose Creek, SC
  • North Charleston, SC
  • Beaufort, SC
  • Savannah, GA
  • Hinesville, GA
  • Brunswick, GA

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Performs and records history and physical examinations and records data from clinic visits.
  2. Evaluates, consults, develops diagnosis, and manages the primary care panel of patients assigned.
  3. Enters progress notes in computerized medical record and completes workload documentation in a timely manner.
  4. Provides medical care encompassing acute and chronic medical conditions and all appropriate preventive care for both male and female veterans.
  5. Orders diagnostic tests, medications, laboratory tests as medically relevant for each patient.
  6. Provides timely follow-up on results and patient inquiries, including and not limited to completion of view alerts, secure messages and other patient communications.
  7. Determines medical assessment and develops treatment plans according to accepted protocols.
  8. Prescribes medications according to approved formulary, and in accordance with Federal and State Law.
  9. Educates patients concerning medical conditions and recommended treatments. (Specific topics include but are not limited to nutritional counseling, need for smoking cessation, need for periodic immunizations and health screening tests, acute and chronic disease management and other preventive health measures).
  10. Consults other specialties as appropriate, according to service agreements.
  11. Care of female patients may be required as part of ongoing duties both on an ad hoc basis and possibly as a Women’s Health Designated Provider.

Preferred Experience:

Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine, and/or Family Medicine.

Key Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible
  • Must have full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in ANY U.S. State.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits; 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension); and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 8.3% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 12.7% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2015, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $18,000, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $24,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years’ service
