The primary site of inpatient care services is at the University of Toledo Medical Center, but many of our physicians’ practice at hospitals and medical offices throughout the region.
A Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant (PA) assists cardiothoracic surgeons in caring for patients with heart and lung conditions. Their duties encompass a wide range of tasks, including patient evaluation, surgical assistance, and post-operative care. This role will be on a rotation schedule, 3 to 4 days per week, with a shared call rotation among providers in the department.
Responsibilities:
- Preparing patients for discharge, including explaining discharge instructions, providing medication education, and arranging follow-up appointments.
- Providing wound care, managing medications, and ensuring proper patient recovery.
- Monitoring patients in the ICU and on the floor post-surgery.
- Maintaining patient records, scheduling surgeries, and managing patient admissions.
- Educating patients, families, and other staff on various aspects of care
- Communicating effectively with the surgical team, nurses, and other specialists.
- Assisting in the placement and removal of chest tubes, catheters, and arterial lines.
- Conduct endoscopic vein and radial artery harvesting
- First Assisting the surgeon during cardiac and thoracic procedures (CABG, valve, aortic and VATS)
- Ensuring patients are prepared for surgery, including ordering necessary supplies, managing medications, and educating patients on pre-operative instructions.
- Explaining procedures, risks, and expected outcomes to patients and their families.
- Conducting thorough medical histories, physical examinations, and ordering/interpreting diagnostic tests (like X-rays, lab work, ECGs) to assess patient suitability for surgery.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience as a Physician Assistant in Cardiothroacic Surgery
- Certifications/Licensure:
- National Certification as a Physician Assistant
- Ohio State Medical Board to practice as a Physician Assistant
- BLS Certified
- ATLS Certified
- Eligible to obtain and/or maintain a Certificate to Prescribe/DEA

Working Conditions:
- Must be able to work flexible hours, shifts, holidays and weekends.
- Tolerate a busy environment that requires constant interaction with patients, employees, students, residents, and physicians.
- Requires prolonged walking and standing. Occasional lifting of patients sometimes over 200 pounds.
- Occasional carrying of items weighing up to 30 pounds is required.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range and manual dexterity.
- Requires the ability to operate various types of office equipment, including but not limited to: personal computers, fax machines, copiers, telephones
- Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment on a daily basis.
- Must be able to work effectively both with internal and external customers in stressful situations.
