Unique System-level Leadership Opportunity - Medical Director of Inpatient Medicine Hospitalist Division

Job Description

Medical Director – Aultman Inpatient Medicine Hospitalist Division
Location: Aultman Health System, Aultman Hospital
Reports to: Chief Medical Officer

Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative Medical Director to lead our Inpatient Hospitalist Division, overseeing 24 full-time physicians and 14 full-time APRN/CNPs. This role provides strategic and clinical leadership with a primary focus on quality metrics, including throughput efficiency, patient experience, and readmissions.

The Medical Director partners in a dyad leadership model with the service line’s RN Executive Director to jointly manage operational and clinical excellence. The position is further supported by an Associate Medical Director, enabling effective oversight of day-to-day activities, strategic initiatives, and provider development.

In addition to leading the hospitalist program at the central campus, this role also provides oversight of the hospitalist service at the Aultman Orrville campus, a critical access hospital. The site operates with an APRN-only rounding model, supported by an off-site collaborating physician at the Canton campus. While this is a smaller portion of the role, it offers a unique system-level leadership opportunity and the chance to influence care delivery across multiple sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall medical leadership for the hospitalist division, ensuring high-quality, efficient, patient-centered care.
  • Partner with the nurse executive in a dyad leadership model to align clinical quality, operational efficiency, and strategic goals.
  • Oversee clinical operations, scheduling, onboarding, mentoring, and peer coaching for physicians and APRNs, supported by the Associate Medical Director.
  • Drive performance on quality initiatives—throughput, patient experience, readmission reduction—through committee participation and project leadership.
  • Represent the hospitalist group to hospital leadership, medical staff, and the community.
  • Lead quality improvement and patient safety projects from conception through completion.
  • Address provider concerns, facilitate conflict resolution, and ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and standards.
  • Collaborate with diagnostic/therapeutic services and hospital departments to improve patient flow and operational efficiency.
  • Support provider engagement, recruitment, retention, and professional development.
  • Provide leadership oversight to the critical access hospital’s APRN-only hospitalist model, ensuring quality, collaboration, and integration with the central campus.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Board-certified physician with significant hospitalist experience.
  • Proven leadership in quality improvement, clinical operations, and team development.
  • Skilled in peer coaching, change management, and cross-silo collaboration.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with physicians, APRNs, and hospital leadership.
  • Respected clinician with a track record of professionalism and role-model behavior.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO with current, unrestricted medical license.
  • Minimum 5 years of hospitalist practice experience; prior leadership role preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in quality improvement and operational initiatives.
