Job Description

$30k Sign-On Bonus, up to $60k Student Loan Repayment, or Relocation Assistance (all with tenure agreements) available for eligible state new hires 

This Institutional Physician role is a key member of the correctional center’s internal health services team, operating a Doctor’s Office Practice supported by an on-site Nurse Manager. The position offers a structured, multidisciplinary environment focused on delivering high-quality care within a secure setting.

Core responsibilities include diagnosing and treating acute medical conditions, managing medications, and developing individualized treatment plans for inmates. The physician interprets diagnostic data, prescribes interventions and medications, and promotes behavioral improvement through appropriate measures. Additional duties involve patient education on chronic and acute illness management, evidence-based health instruction, and potential reassignment to meet broader departmental needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited medical college
  • Completion of an approved residency in a primary care specialty
  • Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Virginia
  • Board eligible or certified in a primary care specialty
  • Extensive knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities (including symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental illness
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic criteria
  • Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice and interventions appropriate for the assigned population
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing
