Cardiology Job at Sutter Health Valley Area in Oakland, CA

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is seeking a Physician Assistant (PA) to join our highly skilled Cardiac Surgery team in Oakland, CA.

In this role, you will practice at the top of your license, collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary care teams to provide high-quality, patient-centered care. Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including medical history, physical exams, and review of medical records.

• Order and interpret diagnostic tests; identify deviations and report findings to attending physicians.

• Develop and implement patient management and treatment plans.

• Provide patient and family education on therapeutic regimens, health maintenance, and disease prevention.

• Perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, and wound management.

Administrative & Care Coordination

• Accurately document patient encounters in the electronic health record (EPIC).

• Communicate effectively with physicians, staff, and patients to ensure seamless continuity of care.

• Coordinate access to community and health system resources for patients and families.

Performance & Quality Improvement

• Contribute to clinical effectiveness initiatives, pathway development, and process improvements.

• Track and report quality metrics and support clinical research and improvement projects.

Specialty-Specific (Perioperative) Duties

• Function as first or second surgical assistant in accordance with state scope-of-practice guidelines.

• Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, draping, wound exposure, hemostasis, suturing, and dressing application.

• Demonstrate strong knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques.

Qualifications:

Education

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program

Licensure & Certifications

• California PA License

• DEA Controlled Substance Registration (CSRC)

• BLS – Basic Life Support

• ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (department-specific requirement)

Experience

• Minimum 2 years of recent, relevant PA experience

• At least 1 year in cardiac surgery

• At least 1 year in vein harvesting

Skills & Knowledge

• Proficiency in perioperative patient care and surgical assisting

• Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology

• Experience with EPIC or other electronic health records

• Excellent communication and patient education skills

• Ability to work collaboratively in high-stakes, team-based settings

• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
