Position: Medical Director

Facility Type: Nonresidential Office-Based Opiate Treatment Facility (OBOT)

Employment Type: Part-time, Contract

Position Summary, with minimal direct patient care responsibilities

The Medical Director will oversee the clinical operations and medical services of an Office-Based Opiate Treatment (OBOT) facility. The MD is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing opioid use disorder treatment, supervising clinical staff, and providing medical oversight for a census of up to 200 patients.

This position is primarily administrative with minimal direct patient care. The MD will create their own schedule, with 2–4 hours of onsite presence per week (25% of facility open time), and the remainder of responsibilities may be completed remotely.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide medical supervision to two part-time Nurse Practitioners (NPs).
  2. Review at least 10% of patients' medical charts monthly and document the chart review.
  3. Be physically present on-site for a minimum of 2–4 hours per week to meet Tennessee regulatory requirements.
  4. Remain available remotely for consultation, supervision, and regulatory compliance.
  5. Ensure adherence to all state, federal, and local laws and rules regarding opioid use disorder treatment.
  6. Maintain compliance with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) licensure requirements.
  7. Implement and support employee drug screening protocols, including pre-employment and ongoing random screening at least once annually for all staff with direct patient interaction.
  8. Provide direct patient care only in cases where a patient is deemed 'high risk.'
  9. Ensure the proper use of FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorders (e.g., buprenorphine).
  10. Participate in policy development and quality improvement initiatives.
  11. Collaborate with the Facility Director and governing body to support clinical operations.
  12. Maintain communication with staff regarding best practices, clinical guidelines, and program goals.

Qualifications

  1. Licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in Tennessee.
  2. Unrestricted license to practice medicine or osteopathy.
  3. Hold an active DATA 2000 waiver (DEA X-waiver) to prescribe buprenorphine.
  4. Board certification or exam eligibility in Addiction Psychiatry (ABPN) or certification in Addiction Medicine (ABAM/ABPM), or meet the Tennessee Department of Health definition of Addiction Specialist.
  5. At least 2 years of documented experience treating patients with substance-use disorders.

Additional Requirements

  1. Must comply with TDMHSAS Office of Licensure regulations.
  2. Cannot serve as Medical Director of more than three facilities without written approval.
  3. Must complete documentation and maintain accurate medical records in accordance with state and federal guidelines.

Compensation

$2,000 per month, commensurate with experience and credentials.
  Flexible schedule with the ability to set your own hours. (An estimated 10 hours a month total).
