Job Description

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Pediatric Oncology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This is a collaborative recruitment supported by the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Darby Children’s Research Institute, the Hollings Cancer Center, and the Integrated Center for Cellular Therapy.

We are seeking a physician-scientist with a research focus on immune-based approaches for the treatment of childhood cancers. Candidates with expertise in CAR T-cell or other cellular therapies are of particular interest. Additional areas of consideration include:

  • The role of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment
  • Mechanisms of immune suppression
  • Development of novel immunotherapies

MUSC is home to the only pediatric stem cell transplant, CAR-T, gene therapy, and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship programs in South Carolina. The combined pediatric and adult BMT and Cellular Therapy Programs are FACT-accredited, with outcomes rated as overperforming by the CIBMTR (2020–2022). The program is also an authorized treatment center for gene therapy. Our pediatric cancer program has been consistently ranked among the Top 50 nationally by U.S. News & World Report, including a 15th-in-the-nation ranking for outcomes (2020–2021).

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology is an active participant in national and international research collaborations, including the Children’s Oncology Group, Beat Childhood Cancer, the Pediatric Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Consortium, and BMT-CTN. We also support a robust portfolio of industry-sponsored clinical trials in oncology, hematology, sickle cell disease, and gene therapy. Close collaborations with the Hollings Cancer Center (MUSC’s NCI-designated cancer center), the Darby Children’s Research Institute, and the Center for Cellular Therapy—a cGMP facility producing research cellular therapy products—further strengthen our program. The Division includes a dedicated team of 12 attending physicians (including 2 nocturnists), six inpatient advanced practice providers, eight outpatient advanced practice providers, and a fellowship program.

In 2020, MUSC Children’s Health opened the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion, a state-of-the-art, 250-bed facility transforming care for children, women, and families across the region. This is complemented by the Charles P. Darby Children’s Research Institute, the largest pediatric research facility in the Carolinas and one of only 15 dedicated pediatric research centers in the country.

Ideal Candidates:

  • Board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
  • MD or MD/PhD with a strong record of research accomplishments and peer-reviewed publications
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain a nationally recognized translational and clinical research program
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows

We will provide:

  • Competitive start-up packages
  • Well-designed laboratory space
  • Access to state-of-the-art core facilities
  • Support from our NCI designated Hollings Cancer Center, Department of Pediatrics, and Integrated Center for Cellular Therapy Program
  • Mentorship to support wellness, career growth, and development.
  • Epic EMR platform
  • Relocation assistance
  • Faculty appointment with academic rank and salary commensurate with qualifications
  • Excellent benefits package, including a pension and optional tax-deferred contributions
  • Sovereign Immunity malpractice coverage
  • 22 days of annual leave, 15 days of sick leave, and 13 paid holidays
  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) eligibility
  • CME allowance + time off
