Position Summary
Kettering Health System is actively recruiting a board-certified/board-eligible critical care physician to join our expanding Advanced Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit (CVICU). This strategic role supports the growth of our Advanced Heart Failure, Cardiogenic Shock, and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) programs—cornerstones of the Kettering Heart and Vascular Institute’s strategic expansion plan.
Qualifications
We welcome candidates with the following training and experience:
- Board-certified/board-eligible in Critical Care Medicine with one of the following backgrounds:
- Internal Medicine
- Cardiology
- Anesthesia
- Emergency Medicine
- Cardiothoracic surgery
- General surgery
- Vascular surgery
- Candidates with a non-accredited fellowship in cardiovascular critical care or substantial hands-on experience in high-acuity cardiovascular intensive care units are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Proficiency in mechanical circulatory support (MCS) technologies—including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), Impella, and left ventricular assist devices (LVADs)—is preferred. However, a strong willingness to engage and excel in the comprehensive application of these advanced therapies is essential.
- Minimum 2 years of post-fellowship experience. Recent graduates with the appropriate profile will be considered.
- Strong commitment to interdisciplinary care and APP-led rounding models

Responsibilities
- Deliver Excellent-Level Care
Provide high-acuity management for patients with complex cardiac conditions, including post-operative cardiac surgery, cardiogenic shock, and advanced heart failure, within a tiered, evidence-based care model.
- Lead Interdisciplinary Rounds
Direct organ-system-based rounds with APPs, nurses, and subspecialty teams, exercising clinical autonomy and fostering collaborative decision-making in a high-intensity CVICU environment.
- Manage Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS)
Initiate, manage, and troubleshoot ECMO, IABP, Impella, and LVAD therapies in partnership with the multidisciplinary shock and advanced heart failure team.
- Uphold the Highest Moral and Professional Standards
Model ethical decision-making, compassionate care, and professional integrity in every aspect of clinical practice, mentorship, and collaboration.
- Mentor APPs and Frontline Providers
Serve as a clinical educator and mentor for APPs, integrating tiered onboarding, simulation-based learning, and progressive competency development.
- Educate Residents and Fellows
Provide bedside teaching, procedural guidance, and curriculum-aligned mentorship for rotating trainees in cardiovascular critical care.
- Drive Protocol and Program Development
Contribute to the design and refinement of clinical protocols, quality improvement initiatives, and strategic growth of the CVICU program, aligned with national standards (AHA, ACC, SCCM, ISHLT, ELSO).
- Foster Multispecialty Collaboration
Collaborate seamlessly with cardiology subspecialties, cardiac surgery, anesthesia, and other disciplines to ensure integrated, patient-centered care.
- Call Schedule
Approximately 14-shifts per month, structured as 12-hour shifts (with flexibility). Some night shifts are expected with night coverage primarily supported by a highly skilled team of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs).
