GI Hospitalist (Only work 10-14 days per month)

Job Description

Position Overview

Seeking a full-time BC/BE Gastroenterology Hospitalist to join our growing GI team. This is a unique opportunity to practice exclusively inpatient gastroenterology in a supportive, academic-affiliated environment serving Lubbock and the surrounding West Texas region.

  1. Consultative inpatient service only, no outpatient work required.
  • 10-14 days per month, 7 days will be generally be consecutive.
  • Midlevel support M-F from 7:30-5PM.
  • GI Fellows support, including after hours and on weekends.
  • Brand new, state-of-the-art cancer center opening Spring 2026: Strong collaboration with Hepatobiliary Surgery and Surgical Oncology.
  • Regional Referral Center: UMC serves as a trusted referral hub for Lubbock and the surrounding communities across West Texas and Eastern New Mexico with a diverse and consistent patient volume.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive inpatient gastroenterology consultative care, including evaluation and management of acute GI conditions.
  • Perform inpatient procedures such as EGD, colonoscopy, and management of GI bleeding.
  • Collaborate with hospitalists, intensivists, surgeons, and other specialists to coordinate patient care.
  • Supervise and work closely with advanced practice providers (APPs) and GI fellows.
  • Interpret diagnostic tests and imaging in coordination with radiology and pathology.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and case discussions.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical records.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives, safety protocols, and evidence-based practices within the GI service.
  • Engage in academic and professional development with Texas Tech affiliation and UMC leadership initiatives.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO, board-certified/eligible in Gastroenterology.
  • ERCP/EUS skills required.
  • Texas medical license (or eligibility).

Work Setting

  • Two endoscopy centers-one at hospital and one in the growing southwestern part of the city.
  • Cerner EMR (moving to EPIC in 2026).
  • Olympus 190 scopes, Omega machine (2026).
  • On-site support: Certified GI nurses, APPs, CMAs, fellows, CRNAs, clinic manager.
