Self Regional Healthcare Hospital Medicine Group Description:

Facilities: Self Regional Healthcare was established in 1951 after a tornado destroyed the older hospital in Greenwood, SC given to the community by a local philanthropist Mr James Self in honor of his father and brother who were both physicians. Today it is a modern, 358-bed hospital. We have 30 critical care beds in our ICU and a 32-bed step down unit.

Partnership: Under the vision and guidance of Dr Logan our CEO, Self Regional Healthcare is now a part of a 3 hospital system that also includes Edgefield County Healthcare located in Edgefield, SC and Abbeville Area Medical Center located in Abbeville, SC. Self Regional Healthcare serves a seven county catchment area that includes: Edgefield County, Saluda County, McCormick County, Greenwood County, Newberry County, Abbeville County, and Laurens County. Our catchment area population is 250,000 to 300,000.

Schedule: We work 7 AM to 7 PM for day shift Tuesday through Monday and 7 PM to 7 AM for night shift Monday through Sunday. We also have a dedicated admitter from 9 AM to 7 PM Tuesday through Friday who generally takes the vast majority of admissions.

ICU: We have an open ICU, but we also have an intensivist service with whom we work very well. They are happy to offer support to our patients if needed.

PA Support: We do have a PA to help support our surgical co-management service in addition to our surgical co-management lead physician.

Procedures Required: ACLS, lines are a plus but certainly not required.

Specialty Backup: You will absolutely be supported by your hospitalist colleagues and your medical director. Our team also has a great relationship with our specialty colleagues here. We are proud to have extensive specialty backup with: Anesthesia, Cardiology (interventional, TAVR, and EP), Critical Care/Pulmonology, CT Surgery, ENT, General Surgery, GI, Hematology/Oncology, Maxillofacial Surgery, Medical Genetics, OBGYN, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Palliative Care, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Thoracic Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery. All together we have 233 physicians on medical staff at the hospital and 74 physicians on medical staff in the community at SRH. Abbeville Area Medical Center and Edgefield County Healthcare have affiliations with Self Regional Healthcare as well.

Census: Our average day shift rounder census is 14-16. Our average provider at night admits 4-6 patients.

EMR: We use Epic. We have Dragon dictation. We have DAX (AI Dictation) in outpatient departments, which is very helpful.

A Typical Day Shift: We have 7 dayshift rounders each day and one dedicated admitter Tues-Fri. We begin our day at 7 AM, voicemail checkout occurs by 7:30 AM. Our dedicated admitter holds the admission phone Tuesday-Friday and takes the majority of admissions. We make rounds on a large variety of patients. Towards the end of the shift if the dedicated admitter gets a bolus of patients, you may admit 0-2 patients in the late afternoon hours if you are on deck for admissions, generally around 1 per day. We alternate days so if you are up for admissions one day, you are not up for any admissions the next. The shift ends at 7PM and any cross cover can be checked out directly to the night shift physician or to a dedicated voicemail system.

A Typical Night Shift: We have one nocturnist dedicated to ICU. We have one nocturnist dedicated to the floors. There is a physician swing shift from 7 PM – 11 PM Mon-Thr (our busiest days of the week) to help hold the call phone, distribute admissions, and help with admissions during the busiest part of the night. The 3 physicians share all admissions from 7 PM – 11 PM, though the ICU physician takes all the ICU admissions. We average 4-6 admissions per physician per night. This shift runs from 7 PM to 7 AM.

Group Size: There are 24 full time physicians, 1 full time PA in the group

Group Dynamics: Once you have an opportunity to work with your hospital medicine colleagues, you will find out why we have such excellent retention. We work together, laugh together, and celebrate together. And we are always ready to welcome you to the team soon.
