Montana VA Health Care System (MTVAHCS) is seeking an Anesthesiologist in Surgical Services. The staff Anesthesiologist is responsible for maintaining professional and technical competencies and skills to deliver effective, timely and high-quality care to patients referred to them.

Opportunity information:

  • Patient Care - addresses medical problems, practices within the scope of privileges, arrives at the OR/Clinic on time, and physically attends outpatient and inpatient care, conducts medical assessment including history, physical, and mental status examination, and surgical intervention as warranted. Formulates diagnoses based upon data collected and within the scope of practice. Orders laboratory and diagnostic tests as needed.
  • Medical/Clinical Knowledge - Maintains licensure, meets CME requirements, and participates in resident/student training.
  • Interpersonal & Communication Skills - Electronic medical record entries are appropriate in tone and content. Provides appropriate consultative evaluation, treatment, and/or follow-up recommendations.
  • Professionalism - Participates in peer reviews/committees, and absence of validated disruptive or unprofessional behavior.
  • Systems-Based Practice - Complies with safety, security, and privacy policies, arranges proper clinical coverage during planned absences and complies with hand-off communication policy.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  1. VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  2. How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  3. Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $30,000.
  4. The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  5. For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  6. In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  7. Disability Retirement
  8. Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service

It is also the perfect mid-way point between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. Helena is located just miles from the Missouri River and has some of the best fly-fishing in the world.

  • Our 34-bed medical-surgical hospital offers acute, chronic, and specialized inpatient and outpatient services for Veterans.
  • Our 24-bed inpatient mental health facility helps Veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse.
  • The Group House provides Veteran-led mental health meetings and activities.
  • Liberty House offers temporary lodging for Veterans and family members who live more than 125 miles from Fort Harrison.
