Job Description

Pathologists working in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at Robert J. Dole VAMC must be Board Certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Staff Pathologist duties will include but are not limited to:

  • The physician will maintain professionalism, work ethic and responsibility to VA mission, VISN, and Core Values and coordinate and collaborate with the Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service to provide high quality, comprehensive care to the veteran population to include the provision of patient care in the context of a Patient Centered Care model
  • Maintains current Board Certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Additional training or subspecialty certification may be beneficial but is not required
  • Responsible for diagnostic expertise and sign-out in any area for which sub-specialty fellowship training has been completed
  • Provides on-site gross, microscopic, and final diagnosis rendering/sign-out of Surgical pathology and Cytopathology cases. These services also include intraoperative and intra-procedural consultations such as preparation and interpretation of frozen sections and rapid on-site evaluation of fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures. Autopsies are not done on site at RJD VAMC
  • Orders and provides interpretation/sign-out of appropriate Anatomic Pathology immunohistochemical stains and special stains, as well as obtaining and incorporating other appropriate ancillary studies in the report
  • Responsible for coding of Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology reports with both CPT and SNOMED codes
  • Assists with oversight of contracted Anatomic and Clinical Pathology services as needed
  • Provides on-site Clinical Pathology services including but not limited to review of peripheral blood smears and body fluids, review of transfusion requests for medical appropriateness, review of transfusion reactions, review of fee basis test requests for medical appropriateness, and interpretation and evaluation of laboratory tests
  • Clinical Pathology services include Microbiology/Immunology, Hematology, Immunohematology, Blood Banking, Serology, Clinical Chemistry and Point of Care testing. The main facility in Wichita provides transfusion services of packed red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate. No donors are drawn. The Pathologists are responsible for the transfusion medicine services at the facility
  • Work closely with and is under the direction and supervision of the Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service who monitors performance of duties for each granted privilege.

Required Experience: Board Certification in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP). Experienced in general Anatomic Pathology case sign out is also highly preferred.
