Come join our team of PSYCHIATRISTS at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center at Martinsburg.

Psychiatrist Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education:  Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b)  OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),  OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Additional Requirement:  Board certification: Board Eligible is required. Board certification in psychiatry is encouraged.

Preferred Experience:  Required Previous Experience, the successful applicant must be able to demonstrate that he/she has provided treatment or consultative services for at least 100 patients during the past 24 months. A letter of reference must come from the residency director and/or chief of psychiatry from another hospital and/or current/prior supervisor from an inpatient/outpatient treatment facility where the applicant has been affiliated for the last two years. Setting Specific Areas: Inpatient; Outpatient Clinic; Substance Abuse; Long Term Care; Mental Health Intensive Case Management (MHICM); Domiciliary; Telepsychiatry.

PSYCHIATRY CORE CLINICAL PRIVILEGES: Psychiatric admission to inpatient unit, including work-up, diagnostic assessment, and provision of treatment; conduct risk and memory (MMSE/MoCA) assessments on patients using psychiatric principles; perform mental status examinations; perform AIMS; diagnose movement disorders; perform MMSE; make psychiatric diagnoses using current DSM and ICD criteria; provide psychiatric consultation to other providers on patients with mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders; manage a full range of psychotropic medication; manage psychiatric issues in geriatric patients; manage patients with addictive disorders; perform supportive psychotherapy; perform eclectic cognitive psychotherapy; perform group psychotherapy; perform family and marital therapy; evaluation, admission, and detoxification of alcohol/opiate dependence.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Diagnostic assessment, evaluation, and treatment of patients with mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders.
  • Manage patients with addictive disorders, perform supportive psychotherapy and perform mental status examinations on patients using psychiatric and recovery-oriented principals
  • Initial and ongoing assessment of patient's mental, physical, and psychosocial status, including but not limited to:
    • Obtain and document a comprehensive medical and psychological history and physical examination
    • Formulates and record diagnostic impressions
    • Manage minor acute medical problems
    • Take call - remotely and in-person (approximately 90%/10% ratio - subject to change)
    • Order, review and interpret diagnostic tests and take appropriate action
    • Refer patient to consultations with specialty clinics
    • Provide medical advice to patients, families, other services and community health providers
    • Provides appropriate patient education on treatment of Mental Health conditions
    • Be proficient with the VA EHR (CPRS)

Clinical:

  • Demonstrates current clinical knowledge.
  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge in practice (assessments, therapies, clinical skills, etc.) to effectively meet patient needs as well as program, service, functional area or system performance.
  • Attends Medical Center and community meetings, seminars, conferences and represents a professional image of Physician health professional member of the Martinsburg VA Medical Center.
  • Designs/revises formal standards of practice to improve patient outcomes and health care delivery process at the service, functional group, Medical Center, network, or community levels. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams in implementing standards of practice.

Administrative:

  • implements policies and procedures related to patient care delivery with team approach.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary patient care planning and problem resolution.
  • Reports and documents patient care services according to SOP's and Medical Center policies.
  • Serves on process action teams, task forces, investigative boards and committees, as assigned, and provides appropriate communication and feedback to the Chief of Mental Health Service regarding impacts that effect our service

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm- Ad hoc may be authorized according to agency policy and at the discretion of the Supervisor.
