This critical role will help implement the vision of comprehensive and multidisciplinary behavioral health for transplant patients at the system’s quaternary care center, North Shore University Hospital. This position will require from the ideal candidate a strong clinical and team-based approach following a collaborative care and imbedded model. The successful candidate will:

  1. provide inpatient psychiatric consultations and follow-up visits to medical/surgical inpatients and donors.
  2. address the psychological and social challenges associated with organ transplantation, such as anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, and medication side effects.
  3. perform donor evaluation for suitability of living organ donors.
  4. engage in multidisciplinary Collaboration: working closely with transplant team - surgeons, nurses, advanced care practitioners, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.
  5. evaluate and treat patients pre- and post-transplant that have behavioral complications from medical illness, complications from medications, psychiatric disorders that are co-morbid with medical and surgical conditions, and medical complications of different psychiatric disorders.
  6. help with cross coverage needs of the Consultation Liaison Team.

While the Transplant Psychiatrist will be embedded within the Northwell Transplant Institute, this position will have dual reporting responsibility into Northwell’s Behavioral Health Service Line. The Transplant Psychiatrist will also be a member of the Consultation Liaison team and/or Addiction services.

Northwell Transplant Institute

The Northwell Transplant Institute combines all solid organ transplant programs which include the heart (and mechanical circulatory support), lung, liver, and kidney programs under one umbrella. The Transplant Institute has a strong partnership with the Department of Medicine, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Northwell’s Lung Institute. With an integrated network of dedicated interdisciplinary clinical and administrative professionals, Northwell has continued to invest in system-wide organ failure programs across several hospitals, regions, and ambulatory sites. Northwell also has a robust ECMO and ECMO-to-go program, supported by the Northwell Center for Emergency Medicine Services (EMS). Northwell EMS operates one of the largest hospital-based EMS services in the country, an integrated centralized transfer center, as well as a multi-aircraft air-medical transport program. The Northwell Transplant Institute’s committed and highly trained team of medical and surgical transplant specialists use innovative and collaborative approaches to improve outcomes and access to transplantation for patients with all stages of end organ failure.

Transplant procedures are performed at two top-ranked hospitals with advanced surgical capabilities and specialty trained staff – North Shore University Hospital and Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Before and after the transplant procedure, patients may be seen at one of team’s 40+ office locations.

Northwell Health’s Behavioral Health Service Line (BHSL)

Like other Northwell services lines, the BHSL is an umbrella entity that strategically guides and provides services across the health system – and the Department of Psychiatry and Zucker Hillside Hospital are critical foundations. Its mission is to improve the behavioral health of the patients and communities Northwell serves through a full continuum of high-quality, comprehensive clinical services in all of Northwell’s hospitals, outpatient programs, and practices. To improve access, combat stigma, and facilitate earlier diagnosis and treatment, the BHSL prioritizes integrating behavioral health into settings where people engage, study, and worship – including but not limited to primary care settings (adult, pediatric and OB-GYN), schools, colleges and universities, and places of worship. The BHSL has embedded collaborative care behavioral health specialists in 100+ primary care practices; and has co-located behavioral health in medical specialty settings such as oncology, transplant surgery, bariatric surgery, and obstetrics. The BHSL aims to standardize quality services throughout the health system’s urgent care, emergency, outpatient, and inpatient services for people of all ages suffering from psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders. Additionally, the service line supports the next generation of clinicians through four psychiatry residency programs (ZHH, Staten Island University Hospital, JT Mather Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital), multiple psychiatric fellowship programs, and psychology, social work, nursing and NP training programs, while encouraging research in the behavioral health sciences.
