Position Summary:

The Radiation Oncology Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive, advanced nursing care to patients undergoing radiation therapy. Working collaboratively with physicians and the interdisciplinary oncology team, the NP is responsible for independent clinical assessment, management of treatment-related side effects, coordination of care, and patient education. This role supports continuity and quality of care throughout the patient's radiation treatment experience, in compliance with Oregon’s Nurse Practice Act and scope of practice.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive history and physical examinations on new and follow-up radiation oncology patients.
  • Formulate and adjust treatment regimens under established standardized procedures and supervising physician oversight.
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests and lab results.
  • Develop and adjust treatment plans in collaboration with the care team.
  • Monitor patient response to therapy and intervene in the management of side effects.
  • Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, expected side effects, symptom management, and post-treatment care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, tumor boards, and department meetings.
  • Accurately document all findings, plans, and communications in the electronic medical record (EPIC).
  • Collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, social workers, and other care providers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Oregon RN and Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Completion of a Master's or Doctoral Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Board certification as a Nurse Practitioner (Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP or Family NP preferred).
  • Eligible for DEA license with prescriptive authority in Oregon.
  • BLS and ACLS certification from the American Heart Association or Red Cross.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in oncology and/or radiation oncology.
  • Knowledge of radiation therapy treatment protocols and oncology symptom management.
  • Familiarity with EPIC or similar EMR systems.
  • Ability to function independently and triage patients appropriately.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced assessment and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized treatment plans.
  • Excellent communication skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in patient education and supportive care planning.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Capacity to function independently within scope of licensure while working collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Understanding of professional standards, ethical care, and regulatory guidelines specific to Oregon NP practice.
