Job Description:
The VA Healthcare system in Ft. Wayne, Indiana is seeking an experienced board-certified Anesthesiologist. This is an amazing opportunity to make a real impact on the lives of our veterans.
Position Highlights:
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
· Incumbent will provide anesthesiology service throughout the medical center while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.
· She/he will be accountable to the Chief, Surgical Service .
· The Anesthesiologist has responsibility for providing a complete range of anesthetic care to patients including pre-operative assessment, intra operative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post-anesthesia care, in compliance with national Joint Commission accreditation standards.
· The physician provides anesthesia related direct patient care in all functional areas of the Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit, Medical/Surgical wards and clinic settings as needed.
· Pre-anesthetic evaluation, preparatory treatments, physiological and laboratory studies and interventions;
· Management of patients during their anesthetic procedures;
· Post-anesthetic evaluation, consultation and treatment of anesthesia related outcomes.
· She/he must meet anesthesia-related documentation requirements set forth by Joint Commission and participate in development and implementation of program planning, objectives, policies, and standards essential to delivery of quality anesthetic care.
· The physician is responsible for maintaining current clinical privileges and keeping licensure, CPR/ACLS, and all other appropriate documents up to date.
· Preferred experience of being Board Certified or Board eligible in anesthesiology
FUNCTIONS:
A. Pre-Anesthesia evaluation and preparation
1. Review the chart, may include telephone and telemedicine interviews.
2. Interview the patient to:
a. Discuss medical history, including any anesthetic/surgical experiences and drug therapy.
b. Perform examinations which elicit risk management data.
c. Order necessary tests and medications essential to the conduct of anesthesia.
d. Obtain consultations as necessary. During off-tour hours, the in-house on-call anesthesiologist provider will notify the attending on call anesthesiologist of ASA IV or higher patients presenting to the OR for emergent procedures.
e. Record pre-anesthetic evaluations data on the patient’s SF-517 or within Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
B. Peri-anesthetic care:
1. When applicable, re-evaluate and update the patient’s anesthesia information via the “Immediate Pre-operative Assessment” note in CPRS. Review chart. Actively identify the patient, eliciting his/her full name, social security number, and date of birth.
2. Anesthesia personnel must check that all anesthetic equipment to be used for the administration of anesthesia is in working order and present in the operating room prior to the patient’s arrival.
3. Anesthesia provider will appropriately monitor the patient during transport to the OR, intra-operatively and in the immediate post-anesthetic period.
4. Immediately prior to the induction of anesthesia (which includes invasive procedures, regional blocks, general, local, MAC and any other anesthesia procedures) a “time-out” will be performed according to policy, Memorandum 112B-11.
5. Select and administer anesthetic agents to render the patient insensible to pain during the procedure.
6. Support life functions under the stress of anesthetic and surgical manipulations.
7. Record the events of the procedure via electronic record keeping or the SF-517 when necessary.
8. Provision of adequate transfer of patient care (“Hand Off”) and status report between anesthesia licensed independent practitioners (LIP’s) upon assumption of on call responsibilities in accordance with Hospital Memorandum No. 11-100.
C. Post-Anesthetic care:
1. A member of the anesthesia care team remains with the patient as long as necessary.
2. Adequate nursing personnel and equipment necessary for the safe post-anesthetic care will be available.
3. Informing personnel caring for patients in the immediate post-anesthetic period of any specific problems presented by each patient.
4. Assurance that the patient is discharged in accordance with policies established by the Anesthesiology Section.
5. The period of post-anesthetic surveillance is determined by the status of the patient and the judgment of the anesthesia, surgical, procedural and PACU care teams. PACU and post procedural recovery areas will utilize equivalent discharge and dismissal criteria.
D. Quality Assurance: All anesthesia providers will participate in a planned program for evaluation of quality and appropriateness of patient care and resolution of identified anesthesia problems. The Anesthesia Section will monitor quality assurance (QA) data through its morbidity and mortality (M&M) processes, as well as, Veterans Administration Quality Improvement (VASQIP) mechanisms.
QUALIFICATIONS: Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Board Certified or Board Eligible in anesthesiologist is strongly desired.
