The Position
Job Title:
Reports to: Chief Medical Officer
Work Schedule: Normal business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Monday – Friday (Work schedule negotiable). Other hours and / or days as needed for program activities.
Overview of the Position:
The Medical Director of Clinical Education and Research, will be responsible for developing, expanding and overseeing the overall success of clinical education programs. This individual will strengthen and support the regional health workforce by ensuring that new graduates and providers enrolled in the clinical education programs, understand the nuances of care delivery to vulnerable and underserved populations.
Incumbent will ensure compliance with requirements of partner educational institutions. This role will involve both direct patient care, clinical precepting and didactic teaching of graduate clinical learners, and administrative duties focused on expanding the clinical training programs.
Incumbent will initiate relationships with institutions conducting clinical research and facilitate projects that are appropriate to conduct within the clinical setting of the organization.
Knowledge /Qualifications:
- Active South Carolina Medical License (M.D. or D.O.)
- Board certified in medical primary care or office-based specialty
- Experience in residency program training and/or graduate clinical education.
- Knowledge of Requirements of Residency and Medical School Education
- Knowledge of Preceptor Recruitment and Training
- 3 years of experience in medical practice

Administrative responsibilities:
- Develop, expand, and oversee the success of clinical education programs within the organization
- Develop, expand and oversee partnerships with residency programs, medical schools, and advanced practice provider training programs within the region to serve as clinical rotation and residency sites
- Develop, expand and oversee clinical research partnerships focused on improving health outcomes and addressing health disparities
- Develop and maintain rotational syllabus and objectives for all rotations and maintain relevance and validity of education material
- Conduct didactic training for clinical learners as appropriate
- Ensure that all residents and clinical learners receive the appropriate training and education within the clinical program
- Conduct annual provider surveys to optimize preceptor interest and experience; assist in development of ongoing preceptor incentive program
- Conduct annual program evaluations to identify areas for improvement or growth.
- Provide monthly updates of the development and general performance of each clinical training program
- Monitor and support the preceptors, educators, and learners enrolled in the clinical education programs within the organization
- Review and archive all preceptor, educator, and learner records for clinical education within the organization to assure compliance with state regulations and to assure quality of student and resident performance
- Plan for program growth using long term goals and outcomes that align with the organizations goals, visions, and mission, as well as the needs of the educational institutions
- Increase capacity of clinical and residency rotations within the organization.
- Increase the number of preceptors available within the organization to meet the needs of the organization and educational partners
- Increase the number and bredth of clinical research projects being completed by clinical post graduates within the organization
- Develop, expand and oversee new revenue stream through medical billing or other funding sources to create future sustainability
- Maintain updated knowledge of and compliance with program requirements.
- Research and implement clinical placement software to improve training efforts
- Participate in department-level strategic planning and budget process
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provides medical care to patients at the Center as scheduled, including medical orders and patient referrals as appropriate
- Provide medical direction for healthcare activities at the Center
- Provide consultation for health care staff members
- Assist in formulating, executing and periodically reviewing policies, protocols, procedures, and patient referrals as appropriate
- Periodically review patient medical records for accuracy and clinical quality.
- Serves as preceptor for nurse practitioners
- Documents all encounters in electronic medical record
- Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer
