Job Description

The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center seek a cardiothoracic surgery faculty member for the Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation position to join the Department of Surgery.

Position Overview

The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery, led by Dr. Bryan Whitson, MD, PhD at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, is seeking a faculty member who has demonstrated experience in all aspects of cardiothoracic transplantation with a strong focus on lung transplantation. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the evaluation, management, and treatment of patients undergoing lung transplantation. This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment alongside a multidisciplinary team of experts dedicated to improving the lives of patients with advanced lung disease. This position will be located on the main campus of the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital.

The Ohio State Lung Center is the only comprehensive lung and pulmonary center in central Ohio. We are also the only hospital in the region that performs adult lung ransplants an jpulmonary throboendarterectomies, and our Lung Volume Reduction Surgery Program wa the first in the nation to receive a two-year certification of distinction from The Joint Commission, the group that accredits and certifies healthcar organizations in the United States. We are an ELSO-recognized center of excellence for extracorporeal membrane oxygenatio. Consistently recognized by U.S. New & World Report as one of the nation's best hospitals for Cardiology, Heart and Vascular Surgery, as well as Pulmonology and Lung Surgery, Ohio State has the resources, expertise, and innovative clinical programs to better the lives of people living with lung conditions.

The Ohio State Heart and Vascular Center cardiac surgery team is a vibrant team that combines highly skilled surgeons, the most advanced technology, and world-class facilities to deliver exceptional surgical heart care. We specialize in treating the most complex cardiac surgery patients with less invasive therapies, complex reoperations, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve surgery, aortic surgery, endovascular and transcatheter procedures, heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and ECMO. Our faculty are leaders in the education and training of the next generation of cardiac surgeons, attracting the best and the brightest to both our integrated and traditional cardiothoracic surgery training programs.   Our researchers focus on developing new and less invasive therapies to prevent and treat heart disease.

The Ohio State University Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute (DHLRI) employs a team approach to synergize discovery in biomedical research. DHLRI is now one of the world's largest heart and lung research institutes, where physicians, including vascular surgeons and scientists, have access to cutting-edge technologies. Through collaborative efforts with the College of Medicine Office of Research, investigators have a wealth of resources available for research, education, and training. The Grants Management Office within the DHLRI and The Ohio State College of Medicine Office of Research facilitates some of the most advanced research practices in the world.

  Requirements

· Board certification or eligibility in Thoracic Surgery or equivalent

·    Recognized experience and expertise in Lung Transplantation

·    Demonstrated expertise in the evaluation and management of patients with advanced lung disease

·   Demonstrated expertise in the evaluation and management of candidates for lung transplantation

· Qualify for an Ohio license

· Track record of clinical excellence

·  Qualify for academic appointment – Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with previous training and experience

                                                                                                                                                                                                                               
Faculty Defined
Clinical faculty (regardless of rank)  - Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a doctor of medicine (MD), doctorate (PhD) or  other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are  appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career  focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research. 

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank)  - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or  professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate  (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career  focus centers on research, service, and teaching.  Tenure-track faculty with MD or MD/PhD degrees may also be  involved in clinical care.

Research Faculty (regardless of rank)  - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate  professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate  (PhD) or other terminal degree in  the relevant field of study.  Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are  appointed for terms of  one to five years. Their principal career  focus is research.
