Chief of Specialty Care Medicine

Job Description

Located in the heart of West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, the Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) can be found on 175 acres in historic Berkeley County and has a service area of more than 70,000 Veterans in West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The Medical Center, part of the VA Capitol Health Care Network (VISN 5), offers a comprehensive range of services, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, audiology and speech pathology, dental, nursing home, nutrition, podiatry, prosthetics, women's health, mental health, rehabilitation medicine and diagnostic services. Patient care is provided through an integrated primary care concept, and each veteran is assigned to a team of health care providers that follows the patient's care both as an inpatient and an outpatient. Chief of  Specialty Care Medicine 

The Chief of Specialty Care Medicine  is directly accountable to the Chief of Staff. The Chief of Medicine provides clinical leadership, ensures achievement of facility measures and coordination of administrative and programmatic responsibilities. Responsibilities include oversight of and accountability for operations in: Direct responsibility and accountability for operations of Cardiology, Dermatology, Echocardiography, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Infectious Disease Medicine, Oncology, Hospitalists, Intensive Care, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonology and Respiratory Therapy, Rheumatology, and Special Exams.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Basic Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  2. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  3. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met the requirements for certification, (a copy of ECFMG certificate must be provided).
  4. Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  5. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  6. Experience: Board-certified or eligible in Internal Medicine or another Specialty Care area 
  7. Preferred Experience: 3 years of clinical administrative experience.

  Duties include:

  • Adhering to established Center policies and procedures and VA Directives.
  • Demonstrating leadership and accomplishment when providing support to the Chief of Staff and assistance to representatives of various departments/services within the VA organization.
  • Implementing and complying with administrative review of the service's operations to ensure compliance with all internal and external review requirements.
  • Clinical management of patients may include skills necessary for the stabilization of acute complications and may include the initiation of basic life support.
  • Patient education is primarily provided in an interactive setting which requires good interpersonal skills.
  • Under the direction of the Chief of Staff, shall be accountable for all clinical duties and assignments that he/she deems necessary
