Thomas Health’s mission is to be the trusted, personal choice for wellness and quality care, focused on optimal individual health. Our vision is to offer a range of patient-focused service lines creating value, for patients, physicians, and payers through committed healthcare professionals delivering a compassionate, exceptional patient experience, superior clinical outcomes, engaged physicians and staffs, and fiscal stewardship to enhance the health and wellness of the communities we serve.
Thomas Health formed in 2007, forging a partnership based on the strength of two established hospitals—Thomas Memorial and Saint Francis. Bringing the two hospitals under the umbrella of Thomas Health allows us to bring innovative and cost-effective healthcare to the Kanawha Valley. With combined years of service, Thomas Health brings nearly 170 years of service to our region. Thomas Health is a 383-bed hospital system with 1,812 employees and an estimated 450 physicians, making Thomas Health the 17th largest private employer in West Virginia.
The main focus within Thomas Health is to maintain the highest standard of service, while continuing the missions of both hospitals of being the first choice for those in need of healthcare. The partnership between Thomas Memorial Hospital and Saint Francis Hospital means providing advanced technology to a larger community, with access to the highest quality of physicians, nurses, and support staff.
Both hospitals of Thomas Health, Saint Francis and Thomas Memorial, bring a rich history of serving our community.
Saint Francis Hospital, celebrating over 100 years of service to the Kanawha Valley, has become synonymous with comprehensive, faith-based healthcare. Saint Francis Hospital is committed to putting patients first and has earned an enviable reputation for compassionate, high-quality healthcare with a human touch. The hospital was first organized in 1913 when the 25-bed hospital was operated by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Adoration from Williamsville, New York. The Sisters of Saint Francis were recalled to Williamsville in 1921 and the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Wheeling sent five sisters to administer the hospital. Through the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the first formal medical staff was formed in the 1930s and the keystone put in place for decades of “extending Christ’s mission of healing with justice and charity toward the sick and all who care for them.” Faith-based care is rooted in that call that every person is sacred and everyone deserves dignity, respect, and care.
Opened in 1946, Thomas Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit healthcare facility located in South Charleston, West Virginia. We offer supportive, compassionate care, advanced technology and services, and something truly special – the dedication of our employees, physicians, and volunteers, who are the true heart and spirit of our hospital. Thomas Memorial Hospital was named in memory of a South Charleston resident and West Virginia’s first congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Marine Corps Sergeant Herbert J. Thomas Jr., who died in World War II by covering a grenade with his own body that had bounced off a tree and thus saving his fellow soldiers.
