As the county seat of Wayne County, Tennessee, Waynesboro is located 105 miles from Nashville and 135 miles from Memphis. One of Tennessee's most scenic rivers, the Buffalo, meanders through the northern part of Wayne County. The river is famous as a float stream for many canoes. From moderately fast rapids to lazy, slow moving waters, a journey down the Buffalo is to experience nature at its best. For those who fish, the river is home to an abundance of small-mouth bass, rock bass, and catfish. Beautiful Natural Bridge historic site may be the only double span natural bridge formation in the world. It is a purely natural formation that was formed over millions of years by nature. Indians used the site over several different periods of history. Tribes including the Yucchi Indians from Mexico, the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muskogean, Creeks, and Cherokees walked the trails around Natural Bridge long before the white man came to this country. The site is bordered by Forty-Eight Creek, which is crystal clear cool water. Many species of fish can be seen from the banks. Another popular natural creation on the grounds is the Ice cave. The temperature in the cave is a cool 58 degrees year round, and the stream coming out of the cave is stocked with rainbow trout.
