Considered a resort town, nicknamed “The Catskills of the Midwest.” Home to almost 4,500 people. The self-proclaimed Blueberry Capital of the World hosts the well-attended National Blueberry Festival each August. Home to the Michigan Maritime Museum. Notable native: botanist Liberty Hyde Bailey, whose childhood home is a museum.


 

South Haven in Brief

A port city on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Black River that boasts a deep-water harbor, South Haven is a small city with a lot to offer. Called “a gem among small American towns,” it features many public parks and beaches, unique shopping, craft fairs and more—and is little more than 100 miles from Chicago.

South Haven Fun Fact

 

South Haven was founded in 1833 by J.R. Monroe, who was granted a land patent by the U.S. government for 65 acres of land along the shore of Lake Michigan. Unfortunately, he left the city before it began to grow in the 1850s after the first sawmill was built on the banks of the Black River.
