Stonington Institute is an innovative leader in substance abuse treatment. Founded in 1957, the Institute is the longest continuously operating treatment facility in New England. Today, the Institute offers services in North Stonington, Connecticut on 25 acres of farmland and forest as well as two outpatient clinics, one in Groton, CT and the other in Waterford, CT. The Institute serves both adults and adolescents with treatment programs that include: Medical Detoxification; Rehabilitation/Residential Treatment; Partial Hospitalization and Outpatient Services. Stonington Institute accepts private insurance, state-funded medical plans and self-pay arrangements. The Institute is licensed by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health, The Connecticut Department of Children and Families and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Stonington Institute began serving people who struggle with alcoholism and addictions in 1957 as Starlight Farms. The main campus in North Stonington was operated as a fruit and vegetable farm by a WWII fighter pilot who lived on the property with his family until his children left the farm. The property was sold to a neighbor who was among the founders of the AA movement in Connecticut and who created a program where alcoholics could work the farm and learn the 12 Steps.

This rich tradition of 12 Step-based recovery continues to be the cornerstone of Stonington’s treatment programs. On this foundation, Stonington has built programs that treat alcoholism, drug addiction, PTSD, and co-occurring mental health issues that so often complicate lasting recovery for the individual and family. Stonington Institute is located in the southeast corner of CT in New London County. It is easily accessible by I-95 and state roads not only to southeastern Connecticut but surrounding Massachusetts and Rhode Island. There are abundant educational, recreational, cultural and community resources and activities for individuals of all ages in the community.
