The City of Shakopee is named after a Dakota Chief, whose band was living in the area along the Minnesota River when city founder, Thomas A. Holmes, established a trading post here in 1851. The original name was Shah-k'pay but later changed to its present spelling. The city is known for the Valleyfair amusement park and the Canterbury Park racetrack.
