The Hospital

Located in the heart of Beckley, Raleigh General Hospital (RGH) is a 300-bed full service, ambulatory care center that serves as the cornerstone for care for over 250,000 people. RGH offers a broad array of services, including: OBGYN, imaging, cardiac catheterization, oncology, ENT, podiatric, and advanced wound care.  RGH also offer general, orthopedic, vascular, spinal, and trauma surgery.

Raleigh General Hospital is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and is an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), the accrediting arm of the American College of Cardiology. The hospital has also earned designation as a Level III Trauma Center through the American College of Surgeons. RGH offers providers access to state-of-the-art technology such as daVinci robotic assisted surgery.

In 2014, Raleigh General Hospital launched a $7 million renovation project that included facility upgrades to the emergency department, cafeteria and main lobby as well as upgrades to patient rooms and nursing stations. RGH is also preparing to open an outpatient Advanced Wound Care Center in 2016.

Beckley is the largest city in southern West Virginia. Interstates I-77 and I-64 converge at Beckley with the U.S. Route 19 (US-19) expressway also serving the area. Tourism, technology, and transportation thrive here amid three national parks in the very center of the Eastern U.S. But perhaps more than a great place to work, Beckley is an ideal place to live.  Even in the heart of the largest city in southern WV, you'll find woodland and park around every corner. 

Beckley is located approximately 25 miles south of Fayetteville, WV; 50 miles west of Lewisburg, WV; 50 miles north of Bluefield, WV; and 55 miles southeast of Charleston, WV. Beckley-Raleigh County is the hub for retail facilities, financial resources and medical services for southern West Virginia, serving a market area of seven counties.

Tamarack, the state’s premier showcase for fine arts, handcrafts and Appalachian cuisine, is located in Beckley. The Appalachian Festival is a four-day, citywide celebration that takes place during the third week of August each year. The Cliffside Amphitheater at Grandview has produced two of the world’s most captivating outdoor dramas for more than 40 years: Honey in the Rock, the nation’s oldest Civil War Drama, and the Hatfields and McCoys. At the Exhibition Coal Mine, one can ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine. The guides are veteran miners and provide firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities and travail of past and present day miners. As you ride through the mine in vintage "man cars" 500 feet below the ground, you will see working equipment and displays demonstrating old mining techniques.  As experienced coal miners, your guides can tell you exactly what went on down in those dark passages.

Recreation

Wild, wonderful West Virginia is a paradise for the outdoor enthusiast. Thousands of tourists visit southern West Virginia each year to challenge the whitewater of the New, Gauley and Greenbrier Rivers. Twenty-two guide companies operate on the rivers. New River Gorge, the state’s most popular outdoor recreation destination, is located just minutes from Beckley. It features the New River Gorge Bridge, the world’s longest single arch steel span bridge and the second highest bridge in the United States. This part of West Virginia is a skier’s wonderland, as Winterplace Ski Resort is situated on southern West Virginia's highest peak, featuring 27 trails. Rock climbing on the monolithic cliffs that line the edges of the New River Gorge is also popular. For golfers, there are 17 courses within an hour’s drive including three at the world-famous Greenbrier. Hunting is a way of life here: black bear, turkey, whitetail deer, squirrel, grouse, bobwhite, cottontail rabbit, mink, fisher, beaver, bobcat, woodchuck, weasel, and red and grey fox are all native to the area. You can also fish for trout, bass, bluegill, muskie, catfish and walleye. There are hundreds of wooded trails for the hiker, and one of the largest limestone regions in the east attracts caving enthusiasts from across the country.

Tennis, swimming, trails and a campground are available at New River Park. Lake Stephens, west of town, is a 303-acre lake with swimming, fishing and boating. Nearby, the northern end of the New River Gorge National River is surrounded by 90 wooded acres with overlooks of the gorge and Horseshoe Bend. The area features hiking, picnicking and playgrounds. Whitewater rafting is popular on the New and Gauley Rivers.
