In 2012, O'Fallon again celebrated its recognition by Money magazine as one of 100 Best Places to Live in the nation. Settled by a German immigrant in the mid-1800s who became the city's first retailer and first postmaster and first railroad agent, O'Fallon had a population of 600 by 1912. By 1956, the population had grown to 1,357, many of the residents commuted to manufacturing jobs in St. Louis. In the mid-1990s, O'Fallon officially became a boomtown with aggressive city-wide infrastructure improvements and phenomenal residential, retail, and manufacturing growth along with a new emerging tourism industry. The city's history includes sites related to early American and Native American history, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Today, O'Fallon's borders have expanded to about 30 square miles and the population is nearly 80,000.
