Affordable, growing and rich in history, McAlester includes family-friendly attractions, cultural destinations and plenty of outdoor activities. The southeast Oklahoma location of the city makes it a top spot for business and industry, and it is home to the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, which is one of the largest employers in the region. McAlester gets its name from J. J. McAlester, who later became Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma and was immortalized as a character in the novel True Grit, which was then made into feature films in 1969 and 2010. The city is the county seat of Pittsburg County and is currently the largest city in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
