The Hospital

Los Alamos Medical Center (LAMC) is a 47-bed acute care facility that provides medical services to the people of Los Alamos County and surrounding areas. A healthcare leader in Northern New Mexico, LAMC offers a host of services including 24-hour emergency care, imaging and laboratory services, women’s services, urology, orthopedics, oncology, pediatric and newborn care, and general and colorectal surgery.

Los Alamos Medical Center is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and is an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), the accrediting arm of the American College of Cardiology. More than $5 million has recently been invested in hospital expansion, improvements, and additions. This includes a new 64-slice CT-scanner, new fluoroscopy equipment, and an extensive renovation to accommodate the DaVita Dialysis Center.

The Community

The modern culture of Los Alamos cannot be separated from the science and technology introduced with the early 1940s wartime mission to develop the atomic bomb under the Manhattan Project. That collegiate, yet military, atmosphere contributed to a competitive spirit among scientists to be the best in their field.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is one of the premier scientific institutions in the world. With an annual budget exceeding $2 billion, the Laboratory operates more than 2,100 individual facilities across its 38 square miles of land and employs about 11,000 people. The 18,000 people who live in Los Alamos County represent the most internationally diverse population in the State of New Mexico. Approximately 7,000 people commute to work at the Laboratory, traveling from Northern New Mexico, Santa Fe and Albuquerque and nearly doubling the Los Alamos population during a standard work week.

The people of Los Alamos have among the highest levels of educational attainment of any community anywhere, with many residents holding a masters’ degree or PhD.   The public school district typically ranks as one of the top school districts in the state and the nation.

In May 2016 AARP rated Los Alamos as “one of the ten most liveable neighborhoods in the US” according to the AARP Livability Index, which compares more than 200,000 neighborhoods across the country in areas including housing, health, environment, neighborhood, transportation, engagement (social and civil involvement) and opportunities.

Recreation

At 7,500 feet, Los Alamos sits atop the Pajarito Plateau. The high-altitude setting combined with the recreational riches of Los Alamos and White Rock offer a myriad of sport and leisure opportunities—for all seasons and all ages. More than 150 miles of trails are woven throughout the town sites and the surrounding mountains. With numerous sunny days, even in winter, hiking and mountain biking are year-round sports.

Los Alamos is home to Pajarito Ski Mountain, the top-notch Larry Walkup Aquatic Center, a scenic, high altitude golf course, a community skating rink, an urban trail system that connects to adjacent National Forest trails and is adjacent to Bandelier National Monument, Jemez National Recreation Area, and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Los Alamos is the eastern terminus of the Jemez Mountains National Scenic Byway. The San Pedro Parks Wilderness (average altitude above 10,000 feet) and the Dome Wilderness are nearby.

Los Alamos hosts many outdoor sporting events each year including Tour de Los Alamos (bicycle road race), the Run the Caldera Marathon, the Pajarito Punishment (mountain bike race), the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs, the Los Alamos Triathlon, golf tournaments, and other sporting tournaments.
