Lexington VA HCS

The Lexington VA Medical Center is a fully accredited, two-division tertiary care medical facility operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It has an operating bed complement of 199 hospital beds and provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services across two main campuses:

  • Cooper Division (1101 Veterans Drive): Located adjacent to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, this division offers acute medical, neurological, surgical, and psychiatric inpatient services. It includes:

    • Emergency care
    • ICU and progressive care units (including a Cardiac Cath Lab)
    • Ambulatory surgery and OR/PACU
    • Hemodialysis

    • Geriatrics, optometry, mental health, and substance abuse treatment

The medical center is also a designated polytrauma site for the VA MidSouth Healthcare Network (VISN 9), coordinating care for severely injured Veterans across the region.

Community and Outreach

Lexington VAMC serves a Veteran population of over 92,000 in its primary service area. To extend care beyond the main campuses, it operates four Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in:

  • Berea
  • Somerset
  • Morehead
  • Hazard

These clinics provide accessible primary care services to Veterans in rural and underserved areas.

The center is deeply integrated into the community through:

  • Fisher House, which provides free lodging for families of hospitalized Veterans and has saved families over $800,000 since 2023
  • VA5K and other events that support Veteran wellness and community engagement
  • Educational partnerships, primarily with the University of Kentucky, offering residency and health training programs in various specialties
