Port Charlotte is an unincorporated community in Charlotte County, Florida, and has a population of 54,392 per the 2010 census. It is part of the Punta Gorda Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2012, U.S. News and World Report listed Port Charlotte among the ten best places in the United States to retire. Located at the north end of the Charlotte Harbor Estuary, northwest of the city of Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte is 100 miles south of Tampa and 65 miles north of Naples. With a warm humid subtropical climate bordering on a tropical wet and dry climate, the summers are long, hot, and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Winters are mild to warm with a pronounced drop in precipitation.
