Since 1946, the staff of the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center has been serving veterans. Today, we proudly serve our nation's veterans with excellent health care as part of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System (VAEKHCS). We consider it our privilege to serve your health care needs in any way we can. VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System's primary service area consists of 39 counties in Kansas and Missouri. Veteran population in these counties totals over 104,000. VAEKHCS provides care to approximately 36,000 veterans.

Why Topeka? You probably learned in elementary school that Topeka was the capital city of Kansas. But we’re so much more! In fact, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine named Topeka one of the top ten cities for the next decade in 2010. There’s new energy and a new outlook in Topeka. The citizens have adopted a strategic plan for the community (see Heartland Visioning) and results are happening. Our young professionals are finding lots to do in formal and informal groups. Take a look at our new arts district, our new Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, new swimming pools and ball diamonds, new businesses and commerce parks and a plan to revitalize the downtown. Farmer’s markets are plentiful, robotics and an international baccalaureate are being introduced in the schools and citizens are taking an active role as volunteers all over the city.

There’s always something to do—from First Friday Art Walks, to Top City Thursdays in downtown to myriad performances by local and touring artists. If playing sports is your thing, there’s plenty of opportunity, or you can go watch indoor football and ice hockey or catch your favorite professional, collegiate or youth event. And of course you can always gather with friends and family in one of our many parks or take in a dinner at one of our many local, and not-so-local restaurants.

The city of Kansas City (1 hour from Topeka) offers a wealth of attractions and is the home to over 2 million people with Midwestern charm and hospitality. The striking landscape of the revitalized city includes wide boulevards, beautiful parks, fantastic architecture and more than 200 fountains. The city's diversions include world-class museums, vibrant arts scene, superb shopping and great blues and jazz clubs. Kansas City enjoys each of the four seasons. Salaries in KC are higher than the U.S. average, and the cost of living is significantly lower.
