Commonwealth Gynecologic Oncology at St. Mary's Hospital is the most comprehensive cancer treatment practice of its kind in the region. Our dedicated group isn’t just recognized for top-level care by the area’s medical community. We’re recognized by patients throughout central Virginia for delivering that care in an extraordinarily personal and reassuring way.

When do you need a gynecologic oncology specialist?
If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer of the female reproductive organs, you can choose to be treated by a combination of general surgeons, physicians and oncologists. Or you can choose a group like ours, where the physicians are board certified in both gynecology and oncology. It’s this rare combination that makes us uniquely qualified to oversee the surgical as well as the medical needs of patients diagnosed with cancers of the reproductive organs, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva.

We work as a team – with you and for you
The Commonwealth treatment team is a hand-picked, tight-knit group of medical professionals who are united in one unwavering goal: to help fight and subdue gynecological cancer. Our single focus does make a difference. Even in surgery, our physicians work as a team so that you receive the benefit of our combined knowledge and skills. Commonwealth nurses are also a very select group, chosen for their specialization in gynecologic oncology as well as their remarkable attention to the details of your care. It’s the kind of care we’d demand for our own mothers, wives, sisters and daughters.

The Patient Navigator: guide, advocate, friend
When you become part of the Bon Secours family, you’ll have access to a personal Patient Navigator, someone who will work tirelessly and effectively on your behalf. Whether it’s helping coordinate with your other physicians and caregivers, locating community resources, offering valuable family support or even just helping you sort through your paperwork, your Patient Navigator will help guide you and your loved ones through the entire treatment process – and even beyond. Many longtime and enduring friendships have been established between our Patient Navigators and their patients. Once you meet yours, we think you’ll see why.

Treatment as individual as you are
Make no mistake. The cancer treatment you will receive here is aggressive, powerful and leading-edge. But it’s delivered in a way you’ll find comfortable and reassuring – from our private entrance at St. Mary’s to the comfortable recliners and private suites available for chemotherapy. With Commonwealth, you know you’re receiving the very latest in drug therapies and pain management from medical professionals who are at the top of their field. We can also offer you complementary therapies, including aromatherapy, therapeutic massage, imaging techniques and more.

A sanctuary of care, exclusively for women
In the midst of a difficult time, The Women’s Specialty Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital is truly a sanctuary. The unit itself is a completely private, totally set-apart wing of the hospital where women can rest, recover and regain their equilibrium after surgery. Beautifully appointed private rooms can even accommodate a family member for overnight stays. Our high nurse-to-patient ratio and thoughtful amenities, including a peaceful hospice area, make the unit an oasis of care that embraces and nurtures the whole woman.
