Montgomery is the state's capital and Montgomery County's county seat. Located on the Alabama River southeast of the center of the state, Montgomery is the second-largest city in Alabama and the 103rd largest in the United States. Maxwell Air Force Base gives a large military presence to the area, and Montgomery is home to many public and private colleges and universities, such as Alabama State University, and local campuses of Troy University and Auburn University.
