ABOUT THE FACILITY

Saint Francis Hospital is Delaware’s only Catholic hospital serving Wilmington and Northern New Castle County since 1924 when it was founded by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Saint Francis Healthcare was founded in 1924 and has been providing quality care to its community for more than 90 years. With 395-beds, SFH employs over 1,000 people and serves patients in Delaware and surrounding Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. 

The system includes Partners in Cardiovascular Health and Cardiovascular Services, 24-hour Emergency Services, Ambulance Service, Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, the da Vinci Surgical System, Gastroenterology Services, Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, Advanced Wound Center, Imaging Services, Sleep/Neurodiagnostics Center, Pain Center, Home Care, Outpatient Physical Therapy and Comprehensive Women’s Services.  Saint Francis Healthcare currently has three community outreach programs – the Saint Clare Medical Mobile Outreach Program offers acute medical care for the uninsured, the Center of Hope provides primary care for less fortunate and immigrant families, and Tiny Steps serves the prenatal, maternity, and postpartum needs for women and babies. Saint Francis Healthcare is affiliated with the Saint Francis Foundation, and Saint Francis LIFE (Living Independently for Elders), a PACE (Program for All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) model.

COMMUNITY DESCRIPTION 

Wilmington, Delaware lies on the shores of the Christina and Delaware rivers. It is the largest city in the state of Delaware, built on the site of Fort Christina, the first Swedish settlement in North America. It is located at the confluence of the Christina River and Brandywine River, near where the Christina flows into the Delaware River. It is the county seat of New Castle County and one of the major cities in the Delaware Valley metropolitan area. Wilmington was named by Proprietor Thomas Penn after his friend Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, who was prime minister in the reign of George II of Great Britain.

As of the 2015 United States Census estimate, the population of the city is 71,948, reflecting an increase of 1.5% from the 2010 Census. The Wilmington Metropolitan Division, comprising New Castle County, DE, Cecil County, MD and Salem County, NJ, had an estimated 2015 population of 723,341. And the Delaware Valley metropolitan area, which includes the cities of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Camden, New Jersey, had a 2015 population of 6,069,875, and a combined statistical area of 7,183,479.
