DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Come explore the Paul L Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, Texas. We serve a diverse, primarily Hispanic community from our location less than one mile from the US – Mexico border. Our 3 year categorical EM residency program has been training emergency physicians for over 30 years. Our campus is home to 400 medical students as well as nursing and biomedical sciences students.
University Medical Center (UMC), along with El Paso Children's Hospital form our home base. Here you will find clean, well run public hospitals and the only level 1 trauma center for over 250 miles. Our new second location, Transmountain hospital is now under construction in the western suburbs of El Paso and will become our new community home in the winter of 2017.
Our EM residency program is part of a GME program hosting over 200 interns, residents and fellows. The department boasts a state of the art simulation center which provides training to not only our students and residents, but also El Paso EMS, US Border Patrol and learners from other academic departments. The West Texas Regional Poison Center, run by our toxicology faculty, is poised to host future toxicology fellows.
El Paso is a safe, low crime rate, family friendly mid-sized city with excellent schools, affordable housing and mild winters. We have no local wage, state income or estate taxes and a favorable cost of living. There are abundant recreational opportunities in the surrounding desert, mountains and nearby forests and lakes. Franklin Mountains State Park is the largest urban park in the nation.
